Ennis, Montana SRPAP Retreat 2008
SNOW IN JUNE!

Following the plow

We followed the plow over the pass...intrepid plein air painters.

This year during an annual Plein Air retreat our group visited Ennis, Montana.  The Big sky country was not filled with boring blue skys, but rather thunderous storm clouds with a few days of snow, hail and sleet.  These experiences are just what the plein air painter lives for -some drama and it's these dynamics that shift colors of the landscape because they are related to the storm's influences.

Nobody questions the validity and usefulness of drawing and painting the human form in life studies.  The practice has been around for centuries.  Late in the nineteenth century the plein air movement took hold as the importance of observing and recording actual colors and values from nature found credence.  Both are studies from real life and the practice of painting from real life cannot be understated.  I have personally found that plein air painting is a necessary quiver in the artists arsenal and one that complements studio work.
