Ruth Nordstrom has been paint plein air since 1981.  “When I was first introduced to plein air painting with Sergei Bongart’s workshops, I began to understand the color and light challenges of painting outdoors.”  Since that early experience, she continued painting in plein air, participating in classes under Ron Lucas (one of Bongart’s protégé’s), Oliver Parson and his sons Del and Nolan, Richard Bird, Jessie Ursenbach, and Marilyn Hansen.

Ruth likes to paint the mountains, likely influenced by having been born and raised in southern Alberta, Canada, in the shadow of the Canadian Rockies.

“My biggest challenge in painting plein air is to develop harmony and cohesiveness in painting in spite of constantly changing light conditions.”
